One of the biggest problems in life is that we often stay silent and let underlying negative issues in our lives carry on for so long until the situation becomes unsalvageable.
If you’re a busy career person or you’re an entrepreneur who works from home, you’ll discover that balancing your career and work demands with your commitments to your family is a constant juggling act.
There never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything done, and something or other always crops up to throw a spanner in the works and mess up your plans.
Very often, people sacrifice their family commitments for their work commitments. The idea is that they’re working to provide for their family and once they reach their goals, everything will be blissful.
The harsh truth is that they miss out on time with their family and precious memories are never made because momentous occasions are sacrificed for work issues that will be forgotten in a week.
Countless relationships and marriages have ended because one partner is obsessed with their work. The one who is working feels misunderstood because he’s doing what he thinks is in the best interest of his family.
The family on the other hand doesn’t understand the struggle because the father/mother is hardly around because they’re so busy at work.
The best way to prevent this problem from rearing its ugly head will be to communicate with your spouse, kids, and other family members often.
Find out what they really think. Do they want you to spend more time at home? Have you become a stranger to them?
Does the spouse really want a mansion or is it just you struggling to keep up with the Joneses? Do your kids miss you because they hardly see you?
With proper communication, you’ll have an accurate lay of the land and know how to proceed. If your kids want you to attend their ball game, you’ll know and be able to prioritize this event rather than skip it because ‘something came up at work’.
Besides just communicating with your family, you may wish to hire a mentor or an accountability partner to give you a frank opinion of what you’re doing right and what is wrong.
Usually, feedback from a third party who is not related to you will be more objective and fair. There’s no shame in hiring a mentor or someone to guide you. Even the best performing athletes and CEOs have coaches and mentors to help with their mental game and give them that winning edge.
Depending on where you are in your business, you may or may not be able to hire a mentor. If that’s the case, you can try going on social media and joining peer support groups where people in your niche hang out.
It will be easier to talk shop to them and they’ll have an understanding of the stresses and challenges you face. There are tons of such groups around such as writer groups, gardening groups, online marketing forums, and so on. Just check on Facebook or Google search for forums.
To conclude, sometimes the best way to understand yourself and what you need to change will be to see yourself through someone else’s eyes. With communication, you’ll discover your weaknesses and be able to eliminate them. This will improve your work-life balance and take you to the next level.
